Leaving Vang Vieng, I only had one must see destination left in Laos. That happened to be Don Det which is at the most southern point of the country. However, I still had two weeks left on my visa and two weeks before I could enter Cambodia. My journey down south began with a bus ticket to Vientiane, the capitol of Laos, with two travel buddies, Thor and Richard.
Our time in Vientiane was short lived because it really does not have much going for it. I will say that I had some amaaaaaazing pork wanton noodle soup at this little soup garage though. We spent one day walking around the city and an evening clubbing in true Lao fashion as we were some of the only Westerners onsite.

The next day we hopped on a local bus to Thakhek in hopes of seeing the Kong Lo Cave. This quest was quickly spoiled when we discovered the price it would be to go visit this cave. So we made the best of our one day in Thakhek and did a bit of exploring.
That evening we caught another local bus (this one was a night bus) to Pakse. Nestled among thousands of cucumbers and other goods being shipped we caught a few hours rest before being thrown off the bus at 4:30am at our destination. After finding a place to throw our bags, we caught a few more hours of sleep then sorted out motorbikes and a route to go for a few days. The next day we were off!
After Pakse, I finally arrived at my final destination is Laos. Don Det is one of the 4000 islands on the Mekong River. Where Laos and Cambodia meet, the Mekong river widens and there are a series of islands. Some of these "islands" are a far cry from being an actual island but I think it helps make for a good name. I spent the next 8 night doing some hardcore chillin' in this incredibly laid back environment.
