We left Vietnam on January 7th to head back to
Thailand so Monica would have the opportunity to travel the north before having
to head home. We spent our first night on a sleeper train from Bangkok to
Chiang Mai. We spent a full day and one night in Chiang Mai and did a little
sightseeing.
The next day we made a spur of the moment decision and took
off to Pai. We had already paid for our second night in Chiang Mai but we were
able to push our reservation back a few days so we could head out. We figured
we could just bring a small backpack and leave most of our belongings since we
were coming back. That would have been a great idea if we had checked the
weather report and realized that it gets really cold at night.
Pai is a very small town in the northwest of Thailand. It is
tucked up in the mountains and is about a three hour windy drive from Chiang
Mai. The town has a very strong population of Thai-Rastafarians and has a very
hippy laid back feel. You can easily get
around on foot but if you want to go out and see the sites you need to rent a
motorbike. We spent four nights in Pai seeing the sites during the day and
enjoying the company of our hostel mates in the evening. The hostel was amazing
and had an incredibly rustic feel as it was tucked away in the rice patty
fields.
So you know the phase "It's a small world"? Well, I met a girl at our hostel in small little Pai who was from Sacramento. To make it an even smaller world she not only lived in Sacramento but lived less than a block from me. Literally lived around the corner. Small fucking world...
